Premiere in Berlin: Etant Donnés by Markus Öhrn

Etant donnés is shown at HUA (Hebbel am Ufer) in Berlin.

HAU 3: Berlin Premiere 11th of April, 8 pm. Daily shows from 12th to 14th of April at 9.30 pm.
HAU 2: 8th of April, Open Talk – Precarious Bodies, with: Panaibra Gabriel Canda, Jan Fabre & Markus Öhrn

Texts: Jan Fabre
Director: Markus Öhrn
With: Jakob Öhrman, Nadine Dubois, Markus Öhrn
Music: Andreas Catjar
Costumes: Pia Aleborg

The Swedish director and video artist Markus Öhrn subjects “Étant donnés” to a radically new interpretation. Jan Fabre wrote the solo piece, based on an artwork by Marcel Duchamp, for his actress and muse Els Deceukelier. In his staging, which came about by invitation of the author, Öhrn thematizes the instrumentalization of the nude female body on stage. He puts the protagonist in the kind of “casting couch” situation that is prevalent in the porno industry.

Turist by Ruben Östlund

The shooting for Ruben Östlunds upcoming feature film, “Tourist”, just started. And I just finished my work with the costumes for this movie!

“Tourist” highlights “behavior that people have seen in others — mostly in conflict areas — think they’ll never resort to, and then have to admit that they have that side to their character.”

It turns on a happy Swedish family — father, mother, two kids — holidaying in the French Alps. An avalanche sparks a spontaneous act of cowardice from the father, who can’t understand why he reacted that way.

The Röhsska Museum – new acquisitions to the collections

The Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg
5 Feb – 12 may

The Röhsska Museum collects both old and contemporary jewellery. When it comes to buying new pieces for the collections, the emphasis is on jewellery art from our own era, often characterised by a new approach to the traditional materials and symbolic values associated with jewellery. This small exhibition presents a selection of our purchases from the last five years.

Works by artists living in Sweden, including Pia Aleborg, Sofia Björkman, Castello Hansen, Hanna Hedman, Karin Johansson and Aud Charlotte Ho Sook Sinding are shown togheter with pieces by Lin Cheung (England), Gemma Draper (Spain), Lina Peterson (England), Ulrich Reithofer (The Netherlands), Lucy Sarneel (The Netherlands), Bettina Speckner (Germany), Lars Sture (Norway) and Manuel Vilhena (Portugal).

In the image you can see my necklace from the collection APARTFROM (2005), being presented for the friends of Röhsska Museum.

We Love Africa…

PREMIER at Ballhaus Ost, Berlin.
The 5th of October at 20:00.

“Daddy” is caught in a crisis. The family has managed to escape the horrors of Joseph Fritzl’s cellar, now daily routine dominates life. The division of social roles has been weakened by middle-class, westernized ways of life: daddy still might be head of the family, the provider and protector of women and children, but he has been ‘castrated’ by society’s lack of recognition for his role as patriarch and feels restricted in the implementation of the family project.

We love Africa and Africa loves us takes up where Conte d’Amour left off. While Conte d’Amour described the story of a vertical “stepping down” in the cellar of romantic love, in this new production by Markus Öhrn [Niskanpää/Berlin], Institutet [Malmö/Berlin] and Nya Rampen [Helsinki/Berlin], the family has managed to make it to the ground floor. From here – a kind of ground zero of modern democracy – its members try to find external justification for their internal psychology. Western images of Africa as an unknown, wild, authentic place in need of aid conveniently lend it the ‘otherness’ the white family needs to redefine and inspire its conventions.

We love Africa and Africa loves us projects ideals of white nuclear families onto the dynamics involved in humanitarian aid for the so-called Third World. This drama about the relationship between helpers and the helped turns post-colonial and racist attitudes into hegemonic, patriarchal fantasies of omnipotence. A projection of inner chaos onto a distant continent called Africa – and a journey to the heart of European darkness.
